This is intentional. The .us address you get resolves to your local IP, not an IP available on the public net.
The best way to handle this is to set up an antlet to act as an OpenVPN server. Then you can connect to your network at any time via VPN, and the .us address will work fine. Be sure to set your new OpenVPN antlet to autostart=true.
