Fine I'll start | My Antsle Setup So Far

Page 1 of 3Next

Hello there,

Pretty quiet around here. Thought I'd share my experience using my Antsle and what I'm using it for currently.

First off, launching and killing VMs is so quick that I've been able to set up a lot in a short period of time. Already doing more than I was doing with multiple machines before.

Here are some of the things I'm currently using my antlets for:

  • Antlet1 (Windows)
    • Plex Server so I can access my media from anywhere. Talks to a NAS on my network to access my movies/shows.
    • Confluence Server for documenting the antlets as well as tracking personal/professional tasks and goals. Local postgres db.
    • This is also the machine I RDP to the most (over openvpn!) for network housekeeping etc...
  • Antlet2 (Ubuntu)
    • Minecraft servers managed with minecraft server manager.
  • Antlet3 (Debian)
    • OpenVPN server. Followed this guide (https://antsle.com/freedomcasts/episode-13/) with  much success and now I can access my home lab from anywhere. I still need to figure out why the server doesn't push out gateway or DNS to the client... But right now I can access my Antsle and Antlets so this issue will probably not get attention from me for now.
  • Antlet 4 (Ubuntu)
    • NGINX server w/ reverse proxy to my confluence server on antlet 1. Much easier/faster to set up (free) SSL certs with NGINX/LetsEncrypt than to set up SSL on the confluence tomcat web server.

So that is it for now. I think I will install JIRA and link it to my confluence server next, since I already have the license. Might try to put JIRA on linux since it seems confluence is kinda slow on windows. I hope others will share their experiences here. I could use the inspiration!

Hey Lou,

thanks for sharing your experiences!

cheers,

Lou,

Thanks for the post.  I too followed the video and was able to get it up and running.  However, I am having an issue resolving my system names -- my "antsle.local" does not work.

Did you do anything special?

Thanks,
Kevin

All,

VPN - Success.  I now have access to my home network as well as my antsle device.

I decided to start all over again - deleted the instance and recreated a new one - everything works as needed - specifically, the ability to remotely print a document.  This was my test to make sure I could access systems internal to my home on the VPN.

The only change I made happened during the configuration phase in generating the client script.  There is a question that asks for "DNS" servers; the video shows the choice of "2" or "Google."  To access my home network, I chose option "1", which is to use the existing DNS resolution configuration within my home DHCP configuration (BTW - I use Google wifi).

My first few efforts were to do exactly what was in the video, which worked, however, this proved challenging as this did not allow access to the home network.  I also do not have a strong background in routers, bridging, access points, router OS's, etc. and it would have taken me a while to figure it out.

Just thought I would share.

Kevin

Thanks for sharing Kevin!

I like the idea of this thread. I've been looking for more uses for my antsle so discussions like this are always my favorite!

My current setup (all antlets are currently running Ubuntu 16.04 LXC):

  • antlet1:
    • NetworkShare: I host a samba drive accessible within my home network. All my computers (Windows) have it mapped to a network drive for easy file transfers between computers, and guests who come over can access it to with my password.
  • antlet2:
    • Seafile: I am running a Seafile server. Similar to the samba network share, but "cloud drive" accessible from anywhere. This is usually how I transfer files to/from my work machine or how I send files to friends and family.
  • antlet3:
    • Git: A private git server with Gogs. No more paying for GitHub private repos or fussing with Visual Studio Team Services.
  • antlet4:
    • AMP: AMP is an excellent bit of software used primarily for hosting video game servers. I'm currently using it for Minecraft and Terraria.
  • antlet5:
    • Plex: I use Plex to host and manage my humble collection of digital rips of all my movies. With Plex apps for almost every device, I can play my movies from anywhere in my home. This antlet is running off a ZPool on a USB 8TB Seagate drive in order to save space on the antsle. The slowdown from having it run through USB isn't even noticeable.
  • antlet6:
    • TeamCity: I do a lot of software development, and I've looked into multiple CI solutions. I used to use Visual Studio Team Services but was disappointed in their lack of integrations and community. I settled on TeamCity because of the vast collection of plugins available.
  • antlet7:
    • Couchbase: The applications I develop sometimes need a database. I settled on Couchbase because of the easy to use UI. Similarly to the Plex server, I run this one off the USB drive to save space on the antsle. This one is tentative as I try things out, but I might move it to the main machine in the future if my reads/writes are too slow.
  • antlet8:
    • ???: Twitch and discord chatbot for streamers?

That's everything for now, but I'm always looking for ways to better utilize this awesome machine I have. My favorite feature is antMan's ability to dynamically allocate resources. It makes management of all these separate antlets/services a dream.

@Lou, do you have any resources you'd recommend for setting up SSL certs with Nginx/Let's Encrypt?

how did you guys get your antlets accessable to the outside network? I just got plex up and running but it says "

Not available outside your network

Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network."

Private 10.1.1.10 : 32400 <- Public xx.xx.xx.xx : 32401 X   Internet

i've opened up ports on my modem but i do believe its because the ip address in plex says 10.1.1.10? lol

i gave up and just did ifdown eth0 then plex got the correct ip LOL

Does anyone have an experience setting up Atlassian products in an Anstle Docker container? Do Docker containers show up as Antlets since they run right on top of AnstleOS? I spent a lot of time installing Windows/Linux to simply get BitBucket, JIRA, and Confluence up. Then I remembered Antsle can run Docker, so I had my 'Ah-ha' moment. However, I haven't attempted yet and would love to see how someone else has done it. Thank you.

I got it figured out. Pretty easy actually, much more so that installing a dedicated VM, db setup, JIRA install/config, patching, hardening...
From now on, I'm sticking to docker containers when possible vs VM (Antlets).

Here's all I used:
